Online Safety Officer (OSO) Provides Continuous Improvement Momentum

As the former General Manager at ProJet Aviation, Julie O’Brien and her Safety Committee convened monthly to review topics presented during the Polaris OSO webinars. These monthly webinars cover a range of subjects, including OSHA regulations, Safety Management Systems (SMS), and relevant case studies, providing valuable material for the management team to reflect on in the context of an FBO’s operations.

“Utilizing OSO was a valuable catalyst for my management team to stay informed on safety topics, maintain focus on our quality and safety standards, and pass that information on to our entire employee pool,” remarked Julie O’Brien.

Julie’s committee utilized the downloadable OSO presentations, handouts, posters, and Toolbox Talk documents to enhance their internal safety promotion initiatives. After each OSO call, the committee would discuss the content and review the applicable training and policy documents to identify any necessary adjustments to their Standard Operating Procedures, Emergency Response Plan, or Safety Management System. Any required changes were noted and documented immediately after every monthly call.

Subsequent modifications were circulated to the entire employee roster to ensure comprehension of the updates, and team members were required to acknowledge these changes through a brief quiz administered via Google Docs. This monthly quiz confirmed that each employee had engaged with the material and understood the implications.

By maintaining this monthly routine, Julie's team kept their safety program current, fostered a culture of engagement among employees, and promoted continuous improvement within the organization.

“The monthly cadence of OSO ensures that safety remains a priority and provides fresh material to enhance engagement. This program is an effective and comprehensive method to keep teams compliant, safe, and engaged in a strong safety culture. I highly recommend this innovative training system for enhancing the efficiency of management teams and making safety training more interactive,” said O’Brien.
